Exciting Beginnings: MarineFission’s First Steps

We are thrilled to announce that MarineFission, founded by Ime, Douwe and Jomi is taking significant strides towards revolutionising offshore energy production through nuclear reactors. Our journey, filled with promising ideas and meticulous planning, is well underway. Here’s an update from our recent meeting on 14th May 2024.

Meeting Highlights:

1. Offshore Nuclear Energy Generation:

• Advantages:

• Eliminates the ‘not in my backyard’ problem.

• Standardisation can reduce costs and construction time, even more than typical Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

• Decommissioning can occur at a central location for all offshore reactors.

• Safer due to the ‘infinite heat-sink’ provided by the ocean.

2. Integration with Offshore Wind Farms:

• The reactors will be situated among offshore wind farms to ensure a consistent energy output.

• During high wind conditions, the excess capacity can be utilised for hydrogen production or training models for various applications.

3. Strategic Planning:

• We aim to become indispensable by collaborating with key players in Big Tech, securing funding through various initiatives, and engaging with angel investors.

• Our strategy includes participating in accelerator programmes and leveraging support from Delft initiatives like Yes!Delft and Delft Enterprises.

4. Future Steps:

• Continuous brainstorming and meeting with industry experts to refine our plans.

• Exploring infrastructure options and potential locations for assembling the platform with nuclear installations.

• Developing additional safety measures to harness the infinite cooling capacity of the sea.

• Combining efforts with Big Tech to guarantee power supply reliability by balancing energy production with computational tasks.

Key To-Do’s:

• Establish connections with essential stakeholders such as government ministries, TenneT for power connections, and reactor manufacturers.

• Consider potential funding sources, including university vouchers, startup initiatives, and possibly unconventional investors from the crypto world.

• Address logistical and legal aspects related to fuel supply, platform stability, and compliance with nuclear regulations.
